According to the Victor Rho Website Poll, The Hoop Factory Elite Canada team were underdogs in some respect, with only a 9% chance of taking home the gold.
Little did the Europeans know, Canadian Basketball is on a rapid rise.
In a 93-86 win over Sabonis Kaunas of Lithuania, Canada’s Hoop Factory Elite were crowned as the first non-European team to win this prestigious tournament.
With this 17-and-under unit comprised of top prospects such as Kevin Pangos, (Dr. Denison HS) Duane Notice, (St. Mike’s) and Anthony Bennett, (Harold Brathwaite HS) it was difficult for any of their European Counterparts to compete at the same level.
Hoop Factory Elite was simply too skilled and too big for the competition, with nobody on the roster under six feet.
In their tournament victory, both 6’1 PG Kevin Pangos (MVP) and 6’4 Forward Anthony Bennett were named as tournament All-stars.
Don’t be surprised if you see some of these same names doing damage on the senior level five years from now. Expect it.
