It was almost as if the competitive nature was sucked out of the gym as all the players were very familiar with each other, resulting in “taking it easy” on the hardwood.
Key player: Nazir Long
Not to say that this sport isn’t played to have fun, but there is a fine line that needs to be put into perspective. MVP Naz Long knew exactly where to draw it as he came out focused and determined to prove that he was indeed one of the top players in the GTA. “I feel like I’m an underdog you know. I had something to prove today. I came with the mindset that I’m trying to win this game, help my team defensively, offensively and get better as a player myself,” says Naz.
A 6’2″ point guard out of Father Goetz Secondary has a tremendous understanding of the game, works hard on defence and has the ability to make plays on offense whether it is distributing or scoring the ball. Also a good rebounder for a guard, a tribute to his focus and will to win.
Both teams started off strong with the score being 31-28 with seven minutes left in the first half. But team black went on a run led by Shaquille Woodcock of Father Henry Carr to open up a 13-point lead going into half time: 46-33.
Woodcock, a 5’9″ point guard with great ball speed and solid court vision.
Team white tried making mini-runs fuelled by Aaron Emmanuel from Father Henry Carr and Alex Thompson from St Mary’s but there was simply too much firepower for team black.
Final Score: 94-78 Black
