Heslip Making Noise
Published by Gilbert Muako on July 20, 2009
After a strong performance over the past two weeks with his AAU traveling team, Grassroots, Brady Heslip’s plans for the fall might change.

Jacob Belcher
Brady Heslip, has opened eyes with impressive games at the past three AAU events: Adidas It Takes 5 Classic (Cincinnati, Ohio), Hall of Fame National Invitational (Springfield, Mass) and Best Buy (Minneapolis). This recent spotlight sparked a train of interest from major NCAA schools, in the 6’1, 180lbs point guard from Nelson High School in Burlington, Ontario. It could have been that Heslip’s AAU team, Grassroots, did not showcase their full potential as they were missing 4 of their star players. Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson were in New Zealand with u19 Canadian men team and Myck Kabongo and Dwight Powell attended the LeBron James Skills Academy Camp. Nonetheless, Grassroots ended up finishing in the Semi’s for all three events. Although player attendance may have turned out to be a shortcoming in the eyes of some, it seemed to be a blessing in disguise for Heslip who was forced to take a bigger role. With an empty stage Heslip was able to use this spotlight to attract Cincinnati, Boston College, Gonzaga, Miami and Rice. This list could possibly grow during the three major events left in the summer: GBOA-AAU, Championship (Las Vegas), Adidas nations world championship (Dallas Texas) and Adidas Super 64 (Las Vegas) in which Grassroots will fight to hold their title as the first Canadian team to win the event last summer. Earlier this year, Brady had committed to Guelph University, but by the looks of things, there is a possibillity for change. The new word is that Heslip could possibly head down south to North Academy in Erie PA for one season then commit to a NCAA school. A while back Heslip mentioned to CROWN that the only thing to change his mind from attending Guelph was if a high major NCAA school came knocking. Now that the time has come will the deadly shooter and one of Canada’s best prospect guards choose the CIS or NCAA?
