On June 19, 2011 the U17 Northern Kings AAU squad captured the 6th Annual Syracuse Carrier Dome Pre-Nationals Campionships, by defeating The Flame (Bronx, NY) by a score of 54-40.
In the Finals of the tournament, the Northern Kings, were led by Denzel Lynch-Blair (6’3″, SF, Jarvis Collegiate, 2012) who led the Kings in scoring with 23 points and by Ben Bakazoo (5’11″, PG, 2012) who contributed 17. “We went up by 9,” recalls Northern King’s Coach Jeffers, “then they made a surge cutting the lead to 2 points”. “After being up by as many as 9 points in the second half, Lynch-Blair knocked down three 3-pointers consecutively and we never looked back since.”
The Northern Kings ran the table on the weekend by going 6-0. Along the way, they racked up victories over the Rockland Rockets (New York City, NY), Buffalo Dragons (Buffalo, NY) and the Seton Saints in pool play. In the Quarter-Finals, they got past another team that was 3-0 at the time, and are fellow Toronto area ballers, the YNBA Avengers. And, later defeated the East Coast Hawks (Brewster, NY) in the semis.
Along with some great contributions on both the defensive and offensive ends from his team, Coach Jeffers highlighted the playmaking of Emmanuel Owootoah (5’10″, PG, Martingrove Collegiate, 2014), who turned a lot of heads of many in attendance, as one of the reasons for the team’s success.
