After what seemed like an eternity, the Pickering High School senior boys basketball team has won its appeal and will be able to play at this year’s Provincial Tournament.
The governing body of high school athletics in Ontario has just overturned its earlier ruling that had originally barred the two-time Ontario AAAA champions from defending their title. The Trojans had used two ineligible players this past December at the Beach Ball Classic Tournament in Myrtle Beach. Pickering coach Mike Gordensky had admitted to using two players, Troy Joseph and Mikail McIntosh, in the tournament to expose them to US college scouts that would be present at the event.
Despite the good news for the Trojans, the basketball team was levied sanctions that include them being banned from OFSAA sanctioned tournaments until June 2010 and Coach Gordensky was prohibited from coaching the team at OFSAA events for the next year. In addition to the basketball team’s sanctions, all of Pickering High School’s sports programs will now be subject to a three year probationary period.
