Sears Signs to Axemen
Riverview, New Brunswick-Anthony Sears out of Riverview High in New Brunswick recently signed to the Acadia Axemen. Sears is currently ranked as the eighth best point guard in the country according to Hoopstarscanada and is the top prospect out of the Maritimes.
One of the most complete PG’s in the country, Sears (6’4) has the ability to score at will, dish to his teammates and possesses superb athletic ability. Among his recruiters across the nation were: Bishops University, St. FX, UNB, Ottawa, Calgary and Windsor. According to Sears, he had it slimmed down to two suitors. “I narrowed my two choices down to Acadia and Bishops. Both schools have a great academic reputation and both basketball teams are in rebuilding stages. It was a really hard decision but in the end I felt I made the right one.”
It was a great nab for first year Head coach of the Axemen, Stephen Baur. Sears, who averaged 32.8 ppg, 7.3rpg and 6.8 apg in his senior campaign looks to translate these stats over to the CIS level. With a solid 2009 recruiting class, Sears admits to success in the near future. “Acadia has also brought in two other big recruits (Owen Klassen and Jonathan Kamba) which will hopefully help our program develop and get us back to the CIS Championship,” said Sears optimistically.
Before Sears’ freshman debut, he plans on preparing himself in order to better adapt to CIS basketball.
“During the offseason, I’m doing a weight training program along with core and running training as well. My coach has provided me with a basketball program to help me work on all the different aspects of basketball (shooting, dribbling, rebounding etc ). I’m also going to play on a club with a bunch of guys who will be playing AUS next year.”
