The Best Shooter in the Land?
Last night I had the unexpected opportunity of watching Brady Heslip man-handle his opposition in 40 minutes of play with no rest. This 6’1 Guelph commit plays for the Halton Ballers for the UTM Summer League. This league has featured some top competition and the likes of Sefton Barrett, (Central Michigan) Paul Blake, (Cape Breton) Daviiau Rodney, (Humber College) David Tyndale (York) and Tamoy Lewis (Lakeland) to name a few.
Immediately after the game, I sat down with Heslip, and it turned out that he wasn’t impressed with his performance. “I had a bad game. I made some bad decisions and had too many turnovers,” he said. It would be interesting to see what a good game looks like considering he scorched the opposition for 46 points, making 8 three-pointers and distributing well, adding 8 assists.
As I sat on the bleachers and observed, it looked as if Heslip barely broke a sweat. With a calm but self-assured demeanour, Brady knocked down shot after shot while maintaining that same swagger. A word of advice for the CIS: the best way to defend him would be to try and deny him the ball; once he gets even a millimetre of daylight, he’s launching it.
Throughout the course of the game, it became clear to me that Brady Heslip was among the top shooters, if not the top shooter in the nation! But how does he do it? “Every day I go in the gym and get my shots up. My warm up consists of 20 makes from the mid-range and 20 from deep. Then I get started with more shooting drills, focusing on maintaining the same form every time.”
Heslip has received interest from South of the border including University of Toledo and UNC-Greensboro, however chose to stay home and commit to Guelph. “I have a good relationship with the Guelph coach and I’d rather start for five years than go to a low major and scrap for minutes”, said Brady. “Unless I get a high-major look, I will be playing for Guelph in September.”
