B Game Camp: Naz Long Takes Over
Published by Gilbert Muako on August 10, 2010
In our second day appearance at the B Game Camp, we were in for a great treat of talented players to take court.
The B Game Camp was a terrific and well organized event giving some of Canada’s best players the opportunity to showcase their talent in front of CIS and NCAA coaches meaning there was a high level basketball on display, where all the players competed hard, making the event to be a great showing overall.
Standouts:
Naz Long 6’3” 185 pounds Combo Guard Montrose Christian 2012 - Long was outstanding in the top 20 game, raising his game to a whole other level compared to anyone else. It’s exciting watching Long due to the fact that he plays the game with so much passion and will do anything to help his team win. Long already has great size at the point and he uses this natural advantage to attack the basket. He also is capable of finishing with either hand making his drives to the hole that much more dangerous. Long was the most impressive player in the top 20 game. He played with great energy and took control of the game by scoring, passing, rebounding, defending and hustling hard while also shooting the ball with great accuracy. This has been one of the best games we’ve seen him play. A talented scoring guard who’s capable of finding his teammates for baskets, Long was definitely the best performer.
Anthony Bennett 6’7” PF/SF Mountain State Academy 2012 – First thing that stands out is Bennett’s college-ready body. He has a strong physical appearance and used it to his advantage to bully the other campers. Bennett showed off his explosive athletic ability throughout games, throwing down an array of monster dunks in the paint on defenders and posterizing opponents while on the fast break. With improved handle and some go-to moves from the perimeter he could help himself become more of a small forward down the line thanks to a decent looking form from three-point territory that needs to be shot with more consistency. Overall, he is a talented player with a whole lot of room to improve.
Dylan Ennis 6’1” 170 pounds PG Lake Forest Academy 2011- This court savvy guard wasn’t at his best in the top 20 game due to multiple turnovers, but he did impress in previous games. Ennis has a good feel for the game, handles the ball at a high level and did an excellent job creating and finding teammates with his court vision. He is extremely quick with ball, has excellent burst of speed and change of direction, with a creative mind that lets him use his handle to beat his man off the dribble. Ennis has improved his overall athleticism, speed, quickness, strength and leaping ability helping him to be a lot more explosive taking it to the basket. Look for him have a spectacular senior campaign.
Sim Bhullar 7’4” 285 pounds C Kiski Prep 2012- The big man has such an amazing presence in the paint. It’s rare to see a 7-foot-4 big man so Bhullar is always the largest on the court. The major improvement Bhullar has made in the past year testifies to how much of a hard worker he is and the willingness to learn that he has even though he still has a great deal of work to fully reach his potential. He has decent hands when catching the ball when much smaller defenders reach to strip the ball, though he could do a better job in this area because he needs to be stronger with it when passing out of the post. He did a fantastic job rebounding using his length and finished at a high rate around the basket off the passes. Bhullar already possesses incredible size, with improved strength and conditioning he will be a big time player.
Tevin Findlay 6’3” 165 pounds CG Henry Carr 2013 – Being one of the youngest players in the top 20 game. Findlay really impressed not letting age to be a setback. He competed hard, was vocal and truly stood out. He was pretty good on dribble penetration and used many hesitation moves to keep defenders guessing. Findlay was also impressive as a play maker for himself or setting up others. The way he approaches the game is also noteworthy, with a fire to compete regardless of everyone having the age factor on him.
Denny McDonald 6’6” 195 pounds F Brehm Prep 2011 - A physical player who does not shy away from contact. McDonald will not be the guy you look to score baskets but does a fantastic job on the defensive end that time can’t be ignored. He is a tenacious rebounder who will work his butt off and never easily give up on a rebound on both ends of the floor. He has an athletic, strong built, is excellent running the floor, did a good job finishing around the basket off the pass and showed he could nail the midrange jumper even though he needs to work on his consistency to implement it within his game.
Grandy Glaze 6’6” 230 pounds PF Notre Dame 2011- Glaze did exactly what he’s loved for doing, hustle plays. Using his strong frame to his advantage, he rebounded well, especially on the offensive end, defended and played with high energy. He also did a nice job handling the ball to take his man to the basket off the dribble. Glaze will definitely need to improve on at least a short jumper and his free throw shooting desperately needs some work. A tough minded player who will grind hard through a course of a game, UNLV have a good one in their hands.
Bryan Rouse 6’4” 185 pounds G/W Brehm Prep 2011 – An athletic guard with a strong slashing game. Rouse is at his best when driving the lane and using his athleticism to finish at the hoop, around or over defenders. Shooting the ball still seems to be his biggest weakness at this point. If he could have effective shooting to his already creative offensive game he will be a much better player.
Kash Lawrence 6’3” 195 pounds W Cardinal Leger 2012 – Lawrence has grown on us after the past couple of times watching him. You first overlook him because he is built more like a football player but he does all the little things on the floor that go unnoticed. He plays with a lot of force, takes at the basket with his strong body and for size he is an excellent rebounder. Tough to justify his position, he just plays with so much energy and will do what ever it takes. Definitely deserving of a mention.
Aaron Emmanuel, 6’1” 170 pounds PG La Lamuiere 2012 – Emmanuel took more of a point guard’s role this time around. We must say he did a solid job. It was exactly where he needs the improvement due to his size. He would be a better prospect if he keeps increasing his game as a lead guard. Another major knock against Emmanuel is his shooting and release point, that should definitely be a focus this for him this year. Overall, he had a solid performance.
