Edmonton, Alberta- “Toronto is a lot different than Edmonton in basketball. In Toronto, players are more athletic, while over here, you have guys who are more catch-and-shoot, fundamental players,” says Abdi Yussuf. Unfortunately for the competition, Abdi’s game includes all of the above.

Born and raised in Toronto, Abdi crafted his game there as a youngster before moving out west and making waves in the Edmonton basketball scene. A crafty shooter who loves to run the floor, Abdi’s teammates compare him to a young Dwayne Wade. “My three point shooting is my main strength,” Abdi tells us. “I shot about 42% from behind the arc in my senior year.”

Abdi’s high school career at M.E. LaZerte High School was nothing short of impressive. Aside from averaging 24 points per game as a senior, he also captained his team to a city championship in 2007, while compiling a slew of tournament all-star and MVP awards along the way.

Now a member of the MacEwan Griffins, Abdi hopes to make a splash on the college scene. “My main goal is to be the best player in the league, and more importantly, help the Griffins win a national championship,” Abdi explains.

            And what about the future?

“I would hopefully get a shot to play with the Edmonton Energy, and set records there.” In the meantime, Abdi will be studying to become a police officer. So whether he’s pulling you over off the court, or crossing you on it, keep your eyes peeled for Abdi Yussuf, one of the best in the west.
