Anthony Bennett: On the Rise
Brampton, Ontario-Good Evening ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to welcome to the stage, the physically acclaimed, Anthony Bennett. This young man’s game is exactly that – young, but not to be underestimated. At 16 years old, he stands 6’6 with a thin yet long frame that gives him the ability to block shots, grab boards and dunk like it’s his day job. Anthony averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks this past season in his sophomore year, playing for Harold Brathwaite High School.
Youth is that period of time in a person’s life where the developments of key mental and physical skills and attributes are focussed on. Hence, if Anthony’s game continues to escalade and he happens to throw on some lean mass, there is no reason he can’t be a serious prospect in the near feature. (Although he already is in his class) Vidal Massiah, the two-time King of Kings at Nike Battlegrounds in 2004 and 2005 and now General Manager of the Hoop Factory elite team, commented on Bennett’s prospective as he told Canada Basketball, “Anthony is an extremely unique athlete. His ability to run the floor and finish plays above the rim is amazing and fun to watch. What is most impressive about him is that he has only scratched the surface of his potential.”
Some of the fabulous learning experiences that he has been a part of were; the U15 National Championships that took place last summer and more recently, the Hoop Factory elite team that was CROWNED champion as they were the first non-European squadron to take home gold at the Victor Rho International tournament in Milan, Italy. In both tourneys, Bennett was named First Team All-Star thanks to his swift moves on the block and his monstrous rebounding. Bennett expresses, “The area I need to improve on is outside the three point line and my ball handling. When I catch the ball outside the three point line its either I shoot or pass. I want to be able to attack the basket too and draw fouls.” He’ll have plenty of time to work on his perimeter game this summer as he trains with the first ever Canadian U16 Cadet Team, coached by the well respected, Roy Rana. Salute to this cadet: Anthony Bennett.
