Theon Reefer: Everyday He’s Hustlin’

What would you expect out of a typical small forward? In my eyes, the position of a small forward is very demanding of versatility. For example, let’s take Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets and examine his game. He can shoot, handle the rock, grab boards, play defence and is extremely efficient when he takes it to the hole.

The skills described above encompass the package that 6’5 Small forward out of Father Henry Carr, Theon Reefer is striving to attain. Being a member of the 2010 class is a bonus as it gives him one more year to work on certain components of his game. There’s a very important feature of Reefer that coaches and spectators can’t ignore and that’s his unwillingness to give up. He’s a hustler in every sense of the word. Crusaders head coach, Melnik best describes Reefer’s hustle as he told CROWN, “He rebounds both his and his teammate’s shots. He’s a monster on the boards.” Reefer averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds for the crusaders last season on a stacked FHC team.

During the 2008-2009 campaign Theon aptly displayed a back to the basket game that made us think that he was a big man trapped in a small body. Melnik says, “He’s a big boy compared to other Canadian guys playing his position.” This may have something to do with some of the post moves that he has adopted. Theon has a superb mid range game and excels when running the wing thanks to his speed and athleticism. This 3 man is sure to add 5- 10 points to the stat sheets next season as he improves his perimeter game and dribble penetration. If he gets his guard game up to par, don’t be surprised if some high div-1 recruiters come knocking on his door.
