Pair of Canadians Fall Short in Indiana State Finals
Published by Michael Henry on March 28, 2011
The Cinderella run of unranked Culver Military Academy Eagles (19-7) fell just short on March 26, 2011, with a 56-42 loss in the 3A State finals to the repeat champions and number 1 ranked, Washington Hatchets (24-4). Ajax, ON native, Jermaine Myers (2012, 6’1″, 175lbs; AAU Indiana Elite) led the Eagles with 17 points 4 assists and 6 steals. Fellow Canadian, Juwan Brescacin (2011, 6’6″, 215lbs) contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds. It was the Culver’s first State Final.
A rocky second quarter saw the Eagles outscored by 12, which proved too deep a whole to climb out of, ending their magical run. The Hatchets were led by McDonald All American Cody Zeller (2011, 6’11″, 2010lbs, Indiana commit.), who is successful on his third trip to the State Finals. Zeller follows in the footsteps of his older brothers Luke (2005; Notre Dame) and Tyler (2008; UNC) who were also won State Titles with the Hatchets.
The loss essentially ends uncommitted Brescasin’s highschool basketball career, as he looks to graduate later on this spring. Jermaine Myers will return again to the Eagles next year, and looking to carry momentum on to the quickly approaching AAU season.
