Manigat… A Golden Griffin
Published by Gilbert Muako on March 17, 2010
Last season Jahenns Manigat was just another talent amongst older and more established name players in the NEDA program such as- Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga) Mangisto Arop (Gonzaga) Mike Allison (Maine) Murphy Burnatowski (Maine), and Roger Dugas (Elon).
This time around things look bit different. NEDA has folded its assistant coach Tarry Upshaw gave birth to REDA a similar program that will help talented Canadian kids stay close to home while training at a high level.
In just its first year REDA has been nothing but a success and its head coach Tarry Upshaw has handed the keys to his veteran point guard Jahenns Manigat to lead the way.

Canisius got a steal with Jahenns Manigat. He can score, pass and is an excellent defender.
As we witness earlier in the season- Manigat is a talented 6-foot-3 scoring point guard from Ottawa, ON who can be a handful for the opposing team. With a smooth looking game Manigat is a terrific outside shooter, very confident in his game, has the ability to create shot for himself or find the open man with excellent court vision. A big time player who has the ability to take over a game at any given time, he can burst out and score a bunch of points in a short period of time.
“He’s a great leader, the kind of kid that works the hardest in practice everyday, his engine is massive, he plays at a high level all the time, (and) he accepts challenges on and off the court.” says Tarry Upshaw
“He can create very well and can shoot so he’ll be a tough cover” Upshaw continues
Manigat left his home of Ottawa, ON to improve his game and play against tougher competition across Canada and American Prep schools. That decision has paid quite well; his impressive play caught the attention of schools such as Niagara, Fordham, Maine, and New Mexico State but he “felt really comfortable with the coaching staff at Canisius” finding his place as he recently gave the Golden Griffins a commitment to play Division 1 basketball in the fall.
Why Canisius?
“I loved my visit there. They have exactly what I am looking for academically, and I will have the opportunity to contribute in my freshman year.”
Plus “the people of Buffalo are extremely nice and the city reminds me a lot of Ottawa, my hometown. Hopefully I’ll be a part of the gradual improvement of the program, and lead them to a MAAC conference championship in my time there. I look forward to nothing but success as a Golden Griffin!”
