Father Henry Carr Tournament: Gold Medal Game

Published by AJ on November 23, 2008

Pickering VS. Henry Carr

Henry Carr: An interesting team, each game has different players stepping up, making an impact. Probably the deepest team in the tournament, Coach Melinik could sub in the second line up without giving up any talent.

Pickering: Similar to FHC, possess a load of talent who are led by the triple threat of (PG) Rob Gagliardi, (C) Kevin Thomas and(SG) Jonathon Tull.

Pickering and the host team Father Henry Carr played outstanding all-tournament long. Therefore, it was fitting to have both teams in the finals.

As the game began, Jonathon Tull immediately fired in a 3-point shot to set the tone for Pickering. At first, it seemed like Henry Carr was going to get blown out as Pickering built a 12-4 lead in the middle of the first quarter. Then, young gun (grade 11)Theon Reefer was subbed into the game, giving FHC the lead at the end of the first 15-14 with his active defence. Reefer had 11pts, 8rbs, 3stls and 1 block on 4/6 shooting.

In the second Q, the game began getting physical as FHC had 10 team fouls, and

Pickering had 9. Kadeem Douglas # 32 nailed back-back 3’s for Henry Carr to give them a 21-17 lead in the beginning of the second. Throughout the half the lead swayed back and forth, until Rob Gagliardi hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the half at a stalemate, 33-33

Picking up where he left off, Gagliardi hits a 3-pointer to open up the third quarter. Kevin Thomas along with Rob carried Pickering to a 50-43 lead at the end of three.

At this point, hundreds of FHC fans begin to feel the game slipping away, but momentarily it doesn’t. Henry Carr open the fourth on a 8-3 run closing in on the Trojans, making it 53-51 with 5:30 left in the game. But that is about as close as it gets.
At this time, I would advise Henry Carr Crusader fans to stop reading as I welcome everybody to the ROB GAGLIARDI show.

With fans on the bleachers talking smack and Rob getting elbowed and shoved throughout the game, the idea was to get into Rob’s head and affect his game. It affected his game alright. To be specific, it affected his 3-point shot.

4 minutes left in the game, Rob steps up hits a dagger trey. Then another, and another, each shot as smooth as the last… all net, no rim. That’s right 3 in a row! FHC were left in awe. The only thing they could do was cheer on for such a great display of shooting and entertainment. What a great way to conclude a great tournament! Thanks Rob.

Oh and by the way, if you haven’t caught on, Pickering won the Gold, 76-65.
