UNLV Score’s Canadian Forward
Published by Gilbert Muako on March 16, 2010
It’s a good time right now for the UNLV Runnin Rebels. Not only will they participate in this year’s NCAA tournament, but Lon Kruger has landed Canadian forward Grandy Glaze as his first recruit of the 2011 class.
Grandy Glaze is a strong forward who hails from Brampton, ON, and is currently playing his school ball at Proctor Academy in Andover, NH.
Glaze has earned a reputation as a hard nose, high energy player; who will sacrifice his body and do whatever it takes to secure a team victory. He has a strong build, power in the rebounding department, yet a tad undersized at the forward position. Nonetheless, Glaze works hard and covers all areas on the floor.
We caught up with the 6-foot-6 forward last night after wining a game with his AAU team CIA Bounce/Team Take over Canada. He had this to say about his recent commit…
“I intentionally picked UNLV because their playing style is up and down basketball and I averaged 20 plus points per game in my sophomore and junior year, and about 30 % of those points were fast breaks and that’s my style of play.
I have good relationship with coach (Lon) Kruger; he’s got a lot of experience in coaching the USA national team in 1992. He knows what it takes to make it all the way to the NBA so I want to learn from him.”
Glaze continues, “I visited the school twice, going into my sophomore year and going into my junior year. I just fell in love with the campus I love it there!”
A list of schools such as South Florida, West Virginia, Akron, Florida, and Saint Joseph’s were pursuing him. Glaze’s CIA Bounce Coach Mike George also agreed that UNLV’s playing style and history of the school makes it a perfect fit for Grandy.
“It’s great for him. It’s obviously a school that specializes in taking in guys under the radar and helping them in becoming pros such as Shawn Marion, Marcus Banks and others. So ultimately, it’s a good opportunity for him especially how they play with a four guard system. They go up and down, there’s no real structure in that sense. They kind of let their players play and Grandy needs that type of environment.”
With the high school season and the recruiting process out the way Glaze is looking forward to the AAU circuit and will be using the off season to improve his all around game to have a successful senior year.
“I’m trying to improve on everything, every aspect of my game, from my ball handling, rebounding, and strength just trying to work on everything in the summer.”
