Wiltjer Chooses Kentucky

Published by on August 29, 2010

Kyle WiltjerJohn Calipari and the University of Kentucky have done it again.

During the half time show of the Boost Mobile Elite 24 game, Calipari’s squad ended up nabbing another top 25 prospect in the 2011 class after Canadian junior player Kyle Wiltjer announced his plans to attend Kentucky.

The 6-foot-9 Wiltjer is a highly skilled forward with a soft touch and an excellent basketball IQ. He is a very versatile player who can rebound, shoot it from deep, possesses a great passing ability for a player his size and has tremendous low post skills.

He was impressed by the job the Wildcats have done, putting together a strong recruiting class, and was enticed by the success of players under Calipari’s tutelage.

“Kentucky’s recruiting class was big and I wanted to surround myself with the best players so I can push myself every day,” Wiltjer said. “I’ve also heard good things about coach Calipari and how he pushes his players to get better for not just the college game, but the next level.

“I just want to go in and work hard, get better and earn my playing time. I’m very comfortable with the coaching staff and we all know that Kentucky has a rich tradition.”

The Canadian forward has raised his stock this summer, ending it off with an MVP honor by scoring 20 points in the Elite 24 all-star game that featured some of the top prospects from across the United States.

Now with the recruiting process out of the way, the Wildcat-to-be has his eyes set on goals for his final year of high school.

“I really want to win another Oregon state championship,” Wiltjer said. “Back-to-back titles would really be an amazing way to end my high school career.

“This summer was very memorable with all the accomplishments. I want to get better and that is always the top priority. I will begin working out in the gym starting next week to get my strength up and ready for college.”

Wiltjer now joins a strong 2011 Kentucky class that includes Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Anthony Davis.
